Academic and General Test

IELTS is available in two test versions: Academic – for people applying for higher education or professional registration, and General Training for those migrating to Australia, Canada and the UK, or applying for secondary education, training programmes and work experience in an English-speaking environment.

Both versions provide a valid and accurate assessment of the four language skills: listening, reading, writing and speaking.

IELTS Listening, Reading and Writing are conducted on the same day with no breaks in between. IELTS Speaking test is usually scheduled on the afternoon but it can be scheduled within seven days before or after that. Candidates are conveyed by their IELTS test centres about the date and location of the speaking test. to inform you of the date and location of your speaking test.

                    Total time duration of the test is 2 hours and 45 minutes.

Listening

Listening test is same for both General and Academic modules.

The Listening module consists of four sections with 40 items. Each section has 1 recording of total 10 questions. A variety of voices and native-speaker accents are used and each section recording can be heard only once.

Nature of the questions

It comprises of a 3 part one-on-one conversation test.

 

  • In Part 1, questions are asked about oneself and a range of familiar topics, such as home, family, work, studies and interests.It is 4-5 minutes long.
  • In Part 2, a card is given askingthe applicant to talk about a particular topic. 1 minute is given before speaking to prepare.
  • In Part 3, questions are asked related to part 3.

 

Reading

Reading test is different for General and Academic module.

A variety of question types is used in order to test a wide range of reading skills.

1) IELTS Academic Reading

The IELTS Academic Reading test includes three long texts which range from the descriptive and factual to the discursive and analytical. The texts are taken from books, journals, magazines, and newspapers.

Topics are suitable for candidates planning undergraduate and postgraduate studies abroad or seeking professional registration.

Nature of the Questions

In Task I, you will be presented with a graph, table, chart or diagram and asked to describe, summarize or explain the information in your own words.

In Task 2, you will be asked to write an essay in response to a point of view, argument or problem.
